EXTERNAL AFFAIRS minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said that the international community should evolve a consensus to end Iran imbroglio. Mukerjee said the issue needs to be addressed through a dialogue and imposition of sanctions by the United Nation Security Council on that country will not solve the problem.
Mukherjee, who visited the city to participate in the Nikhil Bharat Bang Sahitya Sammelan, told reporters that the country has ancient historical and cultural links with Iran. About four million Indians living in West Asian countries, a major source of energy, are partners in socio-economic development.
The country cannot afford to jeopardise interests of such a large population and therefore prefers resolving Iran problem through dialogue, he added.
On the nuclear deal with the United States, Mukherjee stated the Central Government would abide by parameters laid down in three statements. They are the statements of President George W Bush and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh made on July 18, 2005; second on March 2, 2006, and the Manmohan Singh’s explanation to Parliament in August 2006. “We will ensure that these parameters are obtained in the scheduled agreement to be signed later”, he added.
He recounted the explanation made in Parliament about the ongoing negotiations with the USA on civil nuclear cooperation deal. As of now, the US has, by virtue of the recent legislation passed in Congress (USA), removed obstacles in entering into an agreement for civil nuclear cooperation with India. Earlier, the 1954 Act of USA Congress prohibited the US entering into civil nuclear cooperation deal with India.
