Sonia Gandhi ended her election campaign in Gujarat with a series of rallies across the state on Thursday, from Vadodara in the south central region to Patan in the north, culminating in a massive meeting in Ahmedabad.

She harped on the same themes: the atmosphere of fear in the state, the lack of concern of the BJP government for the weaker sections, its doublespeak on terrorism and the reality behind its claim of extraordinary development in the last five years.

“Some 80,000 small and medium mills have shut down; 40 lakh acres of farmland remain thirsty for water; 28,000 reserved posts for scheduled castes and tribes lie vacant; schemes and projects have been launched with fanfare but not a paisa allocated," she said in Vadodara. "What kind of a development is this?"

She alleged that the Narendra Modi government had no regard for farmers. "Lakhs of farmers have been arrested on false charges of power theft," she noted at Patan. "You must teach this government a lesson."
