The Union ministry of tourism will soon launch a web and mobile application for multimedia and interactive “Walking Tours” to monuments across all major cities.
Presently at a testing stage in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai, this will serve as a 3-dimensional interactive guide for tourists, said Parvez Dewan, secretary of the ministry of tourism during the Hoteliers’ 2013 e-conclave organised by the Hotel Association of India here on Thursday.
The idea, he said, is the brainchild of Union tourism minister K Chiranjeevi to attract tourists towards major spots of their interest, besides making the experience comfortable and safe for them.
In Delhi, the focus will be on developing a 3-D “Walking Tour” application to guide visits to monuments from Paharganj near New Delhi railway station, the international airport, major hotels and other spots frequented by international tourists.
According to the ministry, the application will also include information on “wayside amenities, registered and classified accommodation, restaurant options, sight-seeing, public transport timetables and other things.”
The ministry is working on a “robust IT infrastructure to host these applications, capable of handling traffic up to 3 million visitors per month.”
For this, it has collaborated with global IT firms to run the online interactive services. The interactive ‘Walking tours’ will be designed to produce data on transport facilities in India. The ministry is also working on a mobile application that will alert a tourist if he passes a prominent monument in the vicinity.
