In a few months, finding addresses in the city would get easier, thanks to a unique road identification plan approved in-principle by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG).
The civic body has given its nod to invoke a grid-based numbering system to identify roads and streets which are like an intricate pack of noodles in the Millennium City. The proposal was moved by the councillor of Ward 30, Nisha Singh, in a meeting of the corporation's house on Monday. "We expect to have the system in place in three months," Singh said.
As per the new system, streets will be identified by numbers so that no two streets have the same number. Anyone, including the less-literate and non-natives, can easily make out locations across Gurgaon.
"We are going to have things formalised in the next ten days and will go all the way to execute the plan," said mayor Vimal Yadav.
According to experts, the system can be easily scaled up. If the city grows, new street names can easily be assigned. "It will also help civic authorities identify roads to carry out development and maintenance work," said Abhinav Chaturvedi, a resident who first mooted the idea to Singh.
For grid-based naming, roads will be classified on a detailed map of city's road network on the basis of their directionality.
While major part of the New Gurgaon area is laid out in a sort of visible grid and sectors with roads intersecting at right angles making it relatively easier to make a grid structure, the Old Gurgaon does not have well-defined sectors in many parts.
