The SOS messages on social-networking websites, like Facebook, for food and blood evoked huge response in Kashmir with hospital administration asking donors to stop donations till next announcement.
Volunteers, fearing more violence, posted Facebook updates asking people to donate blood at Srinagar’s Jawahar Nagar area on Monday. Within hours, hundreds of people called the volunteers for the blood.
“The SOS on social networking websites is helping to a great deal to face challenging situations like blood in hospitals,” said Dr Saleem Wani, with Community Medicines at leading SMHS hospital.
More than 74 units of blood were collected and sent to Srinagar’s Bones and Joints Hospital and Lal Ded hospital. Hospital authorities have asked donors to stop till next emergency notice.
“We have adequate blood for now,” Bones and Joints hospital medical superintendent Muneer Masoodi told the Hindustan Times. Lal Ded hospital also said it has sufficient stocks of blood.
To express solidarity, Sikh youths also donated blood to help injured victims at a time when Sikhs were protesting in Jammu against clipping of hair of a Sikh youth last week.
