A young Sourav Ganguly quaking in his boots in his first international match 12 years ago makes a rather comical contrast to the tough captain today. A stylish left-hand batsman and useful medium-pace bowler, he has led India to many memorable successes.
Most notable among these are the series win against arch-rivals Pakistan recently, which was a great achievement for Indian cricket as the Indians stun the hosts 2-1 to clinch the series for the first time on Pakistani soil.
Also the win against the touring Australians in 2001 and the 1-1 draw Down Under in January 2004.
Ganguly can also take the credit — or blame, depending on how one looks at it — for transforming India from a team to 'good guys' to 'tough' ones.
Strengths: Attacking strokeplayer, strong on the off-side; competent medium-pace bowler.
Weaknesses: Suspect against quality fast bowling.
What others say: 'He has now acquired great leadership qualities .... He has developed toughness in character and that is what is needed for Indian cricket.' Steve Waugh, former Australian captain.
'Sourav has given them [the Indian team] that confidence and ability to target teams or individuals at key times.' John Buchanan, Australian coach'I am said to be very critical about Ganguly, but I must say he has improved since. He is an outstanding batsman and captain.' Raj Singh Dungarpur, quote in the Hindu.
