Indian captain Sourav Ganguly became a doubtful starter for the second and final cricket Test against New Zealand after he underwent a 'minor surgical procedure' for an abcess in the upper left thigh on Tuesday.
Ganguly was taken to the Fortis Hospital located near the Punjab Cricket Association stadium after complaining of pain in the left thigh on arrival for the team's afternoon practice session.
Ganguly spent nearly two hours at the hospital where he underwent a minor surgical procedure under anaesthesia, an hospital official said.
Ashish Bhatia, Director of Fortis Hospital, which will handle the medical care of the team for the duration of the Test starting on October 16, said: "Ganguly was taken in this evening, and we found an abcess in the left upper thigh.
"The minor surgical procedure was necessitated since the abcess had become septic and needed to be removed immediately."
Bhatia said the procedure itself lasted around 25 minutes and the Indian skipper was given a glass of juice before being "wheeled out of the hospital" to the team hotel in Chandigarh, seven-eight kms from here.
Asked whether Ganguly would be fit in time for the Test, Bhatia only said, "the doctors have advised him 24 hours' rest," throwing an element of doubt over the skipper's participation in the match.
