The South Africans have only played in two World Cups prior to this year’s edition and are relatively lightweight compared to the rest.

Though they are the African champions and enjoy superior physical fitness and strength — as was evident at the Afro-Asian Games in 2003 — the South Africans are not expected to be a big threat.

Coach Paul Revington, 32, is one of the youngest coaches on the international circuit, having taken up coaching at age 23 after injuries forced him out of active play.

Among their key players is Bruce Jacobs, who has more than 100 caps to his name, and midfielders Eric Rose-Innes and Ken Forbes.
