Delhi Police platoons have been posted in the communally sensitive Sangam Vihar area of south Delhi after allegations that the area around Shiv Durga temple had been vandalised.
Tension gripped the area after the alleged incident -- which took place on Friday, the same day when serial blasts ripped Malegaon.
It was decided after a meeting of senior officers to let heavy deployment continue for a few more days.
Tension started in F2 block, Sangam Vihar, on Saturday. On Friday, there was heavy police presence in the area through the night due to shab-e-bara’at. The police commissioner, sources said, was himself on night patrolling.
Pawan, the head priest of Shiv Durga temple in F2 block, had locked the main gate on Friday. When he got up the next morning, he noticed that the entire area around the temple had been dirtied.
When he inquired, the priest was told that over one-and-a-half dozen youths were seen loitering around the area on Friday night. As the news spread, tempers flared. A call was made to the Police Control Room and police rushed to the spot.
“Hundreds gathered at the spot and there were loud protests. As the situation began to worsen, extra force was called in and senior citizens belonging to both communities were called for a discussion by the police,” a senior police officer said.

{{/usCountry}}“Since Saturday, two platoons of the Delhi Police along with the local police have been posted in the area to prevent any untoward incident,” the officer said. “No one has been arrested nor any case registered. We have deployed extra force in the area and other areas as well,” said DCP (south) Anil Shukla.
