WHILE THE ruling Samajwadi Party has been aspiring to wrest two third seats in the next Assembly elections, grassroots workers have given clear indication to the leadership that under prevailing situation it will not be possible to achieve the target.
The leadership is flooded with complaints against senior leaders in districts. The workers have underlined urgent need for surgical operation to improve the health of the organisation. Intelligence inputs about the performance of the ministers too is reportedly not comforting.
The day-long conference of the office-bearers of Assembly constituency units on Saturday was indeed an eye-opener for Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. They launched a tirade against those responsible for the predicament of the party. While the workers vented ire against districts officers, they cheered Yadav when he pointed out that even ministers and other senior party leaders had failed to live up to the expectations. With ministers, MLAs and MPs busy in serving their vested interests, the chief minister has come to realise that must single handedly strive to keep the party’s flag flying.
During the recent phone tapping controversy, while Yadav, Amar Singh and Akhilesh Singh Yadav took up the cudgel, other leaders who were the beneficiaries of the government largess, virtually went into hibernation. The chief minister noticed this lack of concern on part of the leaders. It was this visible unease which forced the chief minister to ask the workers to stop wagging tail behind these leaders.

Intelligence reports of the performance of the ministers have presented them in black hues. The party can not hope to win on the strength of these ministers. Hence the move to mobilise the youth force in the party.
After January 29 rally of frontal organisations here, the chief minister has directed the youth to launch cycle rallies in rural areas to popularise the government’s achievement. The party has thus once again fallen back on its youth force to sail through the electoral battle.
