The Samajwadi Party on Monday said it was opposed to the entry of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi into the city to address a public meeting as it feared he may "arouse communal passions" in the wake of the recent serial blasts in Mumbai.
Samajwadi Party workers would stage a sit-in outside Shanmukhananda hall where Modi is scheduled to address the meeting on Monday evening, party General Secretary Amar Singh told reporters in Mumbai.
He said the party had urged the Maharashtra government to restrain Modi from coming to Mumbai but it had allowed him to address the meeting. In view of this, the party has decided to stage a sit-in, he said.
Singh said even the US had not sanctioned visa to Modi when he was slated to visit the country some time back and Maharashtra government should have exercised similar restraint.
Condemning the serial blasts in Mumbai, he said all political parties, cutting across party lines, should come together and strive for peace.
Singh said the intelligence agencies -- RAW, CBI and IB -- should go after the terrorists, who were bent upon creating disturbances in the country instead of focussing their attention on politicians.
