In a significant move, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday removed most of 82 politically appointed chairmen, advisors and members of various public sector undertakings (PSUs) and various other public bodies.

Many of them had been given the rank of a cabinet minister or a minister of state and enjoyed privileges attached to a minister of the state government.

Barring the heads of nearly 16 public bodies all the other appointees occupying top political posts in such bodies had been removed, an official spokesperson said.

The move is being considered to be yet another step to spruce up the image of Samajwadi Party (SP) government and to enforce discipline in the party organisation at various levels.

A question mark had been hanging over the fate of those given ministerial ranks following reports that many such leaders were not working in the interest of the party. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had taken note of their non-performance and had also expressed his displeasures in public.

The chairmen of the statutory bodies have also not been removed — including the state backward classes commission, state women commission, minorities commission and various selection commissions.
