Manipur assembly is considering a designated court to try and punish sponsors and organisers of blockades in view of the growing trend of bandhs in the state.

The state’s legislators have set up a team to examine the feasibility and legality of the proposal in consultation with experts. The team will submit its report within two months.

Manipur has seen at least 524 bandhs and 104 economic blockades in the last 15 years.
“Manipur loses Rs 5-6 crore per day due to bandhs and Rs 2-3 crore per day due to national highways blockades,” CM O. Ibobi Singh had told the assembly earlier this month.
The state is yet to recover from the 69-day blockade of two highways that the All Naga groups had imposed in April.
