Karnataka Government today informed state assembly that police had been instructed not to arrest innocent people in Hassan, Shimoga and Chikmagalur, which witnessed violence last week following protests by Muslims against the publication of an article in a Kannada daily.
Home Minister V S Acharya said police had made arrests based on video footage to bring normalcy in three districts.
He lauded the measures taken up by police to maintain law and order and said "normalcy is fast returning in Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hassan cities."
Acharya said he had spoken to SPs of the three districts and directed them to not to detain innocent people in connection with the violence that rocked the towns after a Kannada daily published the article on 'burqa' purportedly written by controversial Bangladeshi write Taslima Nasreen.
Earlier, raising the issue, Janata Dal (S) floor leader H D Revanna said police had detained innocent people and students in Hassan district and sought a clarification from the Home Minister.
