Sreesanth checks into Tihar Jail

A city court on Tuesday sent cricketers S Sreesnath and Ajit Chandila, arrested in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal, to Tihar jail till June 4. Chief metropolitan magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma rejected Delhi Police’s plea to keep the duo in custody for two more days.

According to the police they wanted to interrogate Sreesnath in connection with tampering of evidence that took place soon after his arrest at his hotel room. The special cell team had alleged the Indian pacer’s friend had removed some articles soon after the news of Sreesnath’s arrest broke out.

Not accepting the police claim, the court said the cricketer could not be held liable for what happened behind his back. “Admittedly, Sreesanth cannot be held liable for instances at his back. I am of the considered opinion that it would amount to injustice to the accused," the judge noted.

"How will you (investigators) establish that the removed articles belonged to Sreesanth as anyone can plant to falsely implicate him," the court asked public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan.
