Sri Lanka truce monitors get a new head

Sri Lanka's Scandinavian truce monitors will have a new head from April 1 Brig Hagrup Haukland, who is from Norway, will be replaced by Brigadier Ulf Henricsson from Sweden, the Norwegian peace brokers announced on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka's Scandinavian truce monitors will have a new head from April 1 Brig Hagrup Haukland, who is from Norway, will be replaced by Brigadier Ulf Henricsson from Sweden, the Norwegian peace brokers announced on Tuesday.

A press release from the Norwegian government said that following consultations with the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, Norway asked the Scandinavian countries to send nominations for the headship of the monitoring team called the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). The Scandinavian countries supply the truce monitors as per the Ceasefire Agreement CFA).

From among the nominees, Brigadier Henricsson was chosen.

The Norwegian Peace Envoy, Erik Solheim, described Brigadier Henricsson as an "excellent candidate" and thanked Sweden for proposing his name. Solheim also praised the services of Brigadier Haukland as "long and dedicated." Haukland has been with the SLMM for four years.
