Enquiries by police revealed that Kumar(35) was not a refugee, but a native of Kottayana area in Colombo.

Actually Kumar had gone to Malaysia and worked there. When Malaysian authorities ordered his deportation after he overstayed in the country, Kumar was sent to India because he had claimed that he was from Tamil Nadu, police said.

When caught by Malaysian officials, he presented forged documents to show that he is an Indian citizen. Based on that, they sent him to Chennai. From Chennai, he went to Rameswaram by road. In Rameswaram he had tried to merge with refugees at the camp in Mandapam.

“He had thrown the passport and Malaysian visa when officials checked him and claimed he was from Tamil Nadu, following which Malaysian officials had sent him to India.
