The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is examining the feasibility of connecting Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir through Internet to facilitate speedy clearance of travel documents of people commuting between the two cities.
Union home ministry sources said on Friday if the NIC report finds the proposal technically feasible, India is likely to approach Pakistan to implement it and give a fillip to the ongoing peace process between India and Pakistan.
The sources said the issue of e-linking the two cities to facilitate the travellers figured at a high-level meeting convened by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta Thursday in Srinagar.
The Jammu and Kashmir government recently gave a proposal to the central government to connect the two cities through Internet.
Gupta returned here on Friday after his two-day visit to the state to assess the security situation and developmental work.
The home secretary asked the officials from the external ministry affairs to take up the issue with their counterparts in Pakistan.
The proposal is expected to reduce the time taken in clearing travel document to a few days instead of months.
