The order came following the report published in HT Live in December 5 edition regarding excessive use of electricity by some persons living illegally in the residential colony on the hospital campus.

The order states that all the illegal constructions on the hospital campus, including garage, rooms and extensions of the quarters should immediately be demolished by the employees concerned. "If the hospital decides to demolish illegal constructions, the cost will be realised from the employees' salary," the order further states.

"A large number of hospital employees have illegally rented their official quarters to other persons and they themselves are living elsewhere. The illegal occupants are excessively consuming electricity," said Dr Imam.

Dr Imam said every month the electricity bill was deducted from the employees salary on the basis of quarters allotted to them. In some cases the electricity bills were deducted on standard basis whereas in others the bills were charged on the basis of meter reading. "But the amount realised was much less than the electricity bill. Illegal power connections and excessive use of power by the illegal occupants has further increased the electricity bill," he added.

However, several requests were also made to the Power Department to install individual meters and charge the bills according to the meter reading, he added.
