Stage set for Avishkar-06

PREPARATIONS ARE complete, red carpets rolled out and the MNNITians brimming with confidence and determination to make this year the best ever as the annual technical fest of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT)-- Avishkar-2006 begins from September 20.

The three-day event is an attempt on part of the institute of inculcate and nurture innovative and entrepreneurial skills among the students. "The students learn skills of planning and organising during the event besides displaying their technical skills. Students from reputed college and universities have already registered and have even taken part in the various online events and other contests that have already been organised so far. This time students from 13 states, from most of the IITs, IT-BHU, IIITs, NITs, and other state engineering colleges, as well as management institutes have registered themselves for this event," informed MNNIT Director Prof Arun Baran Samaddar on Tuesday.

Talking to media persons, Prof Samaddar said that like previous years, the tech fest this year has received very warm support from leading business organisations by way of sponsorship and expert lectures. This includes Tata Consultancy Services, IBM, Dell, L&T and AR Soft Solutions. Few more confirmations are awaited.

President of the Student Activities Centre Prof Rakesh Narain said that this year a special programme is being organised for school children which is aimed at developing scientific temperament among young students of senior secondary level. The programme includes a visit to various laboratories, computer centre, robotics event and quiz events, he added.

Prof Narain said that in the Online contest 'Kurukshetra' which concluded on September 18, 2006, some 300 teams took part which included participants from Texas A&M University USA, National University of Singapore, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, North South University, Bangladesh, besides six of the IITs and other leading institutions. "Organisations such as Adobe System, Deloitte, HCC, Induslogic, Motorola and Webaroo also took part in it," he said.

During the three days of Avishkar, a total of 54 events have been planned covering various skills of all disciplines. To mention a few, for electronics and computer engineer, the events aim at testing their hardware and software skills.

Robotics is a high profile interdisciplinary event for mechanical, electronics and computer engineers. Civil engineers will show their acumen in bridge construction and model buildings.

Speaking on the occasion, a faculty member of MNNIT's School of Management Studies Dr Geetika said that Avishkar was conceived, planned and organised for the first time ins 2000 by MNNIT students who felt that as one of the top engineering colleges of the country, MNNIT should have its own technical fest.

"Our aim is to make this event truly international from next year and if we succeed in our endeavour, we will have teams coming from abroad to participate in the fest which has already been acknowledged as one of the best in India," she said. Student co-ordinators of Avishkar-2006, faculty members including director of Training and Placement Prof Satish Chand were also present on the occasion.
