The health department has decided to post post-graduate and medical students at PHCs. The health authorities have written a letter to the medical education department for a no objection certificate. The medical education department has forwarded the proposal to the Medical Council of India for approval.

It should be noted that the High Court had recently expressed displeasure over the shortage of doctors and paramedical staff in rural areas. It had directed the State Government to ensure the presence of doctors at PHCs, but the latter failed to perform well in this regard. Sources said there were 371 CHCs, 823 block PHCs, 2815 PHCs and 1,85,777 medical care units in the State.

Due to shortage of doctors, the State Government failed to ensure availability of physicians in each health centre.

There are no doctors or paramedical staff at various PHCs.

According to reports, even though the health department engaged private doctors to meet out the shortage of physicians, it has failed to produce desirable results.

Provincial medical services doctors have been showing little or no interest in rural areas. They prefer to stay at the district headquarters in view of better power supply and education facilities for their wards.

The second option is that MBBS doctors posted at the PHCs would get priority in admission to PG classes.
