?State must not miss the bus?

THE MP Electricity Consumers Society, an association sponsored by six leading industry associations in the State, has written letters to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and State Energy Minster Kailash Vijayvargiya urging them to seize the opportunity offered by the recent civilian nuclear deal between India and the US and make a move to set up nuclear energy plants in the State.

THE MP Electricity Consumers Society, an association sponsored by six leading industry associations in the State, has written letters to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and State Energy Minster Kailash Vijayvargiya urging them to seize the opportunity offered by the recent civilian nuclear deal between India and the US and make a move to set up nuclear energy plants in the State.

The agreement signed between the two countries opens up new vistas of opportunity, especially for an energy-starved state like Madhya Pradesh, which would also be the ideal place to set up such power stations, provided the government moves ahead with alacrity.

If the State succeeds in getting its due of two or three nuclear power stations, it will prove to be a boon, as nuclear power would be of better quality and cheaper than power generated by other sources. It is common knowledge that in the area of quality of power and its cost, Madhya Pradesh is one of the worst states in the country.

The MP Electricity Consumers Society, an association sponsored by AIMO (state board), AIMP, Pithampur Audyogik Sangathan, Association of Industries (Dewas), MP Textile Mills Association and SOPA, is headed by eminent electricity engineer of the country P L Nene.

One of the major advantages with the State is that there are large, scarcely populated areas in the State, which are ideal sites for nuclear power stations. Besides, the State’s location would also help it.

With the abundance of natural resources and its central location, the State is bound to become the hub of industry. The power demand to be met in future requires large power stations, the letter argued.
