State to set up panel to tackle global warming

The delayed monsoon and severe climatic changes has forced the state government to get environment conscious. “The state will form a high-powered committee to look into how the effects of global warming can be tackled. “The state will form a high-powered committee to look into how the effects of global warming can be tackled. Rajendra Pachauri will help the committee in formulating an effective action plan,” Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said on Friday.

Pachauri has served as chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 2002.

He is also the director general of the Energy and Resources Institute in Delhi.

Chavan said the action plan would be two-fold — one would be sector specific highlighting what action industries could take to help deal with climatic changes while the other would be region and area specific.

This would allow the government to identify problem areas and take steps towards protecting ecosystems.

“Maharashtra with its varied ecosystems is most susceptible to the impact of global warming. The state’s initiative to set up a committee to handle the crisis is laudable,” Pachauri said.

The state has not yet finalised a time frame for drafting the action plan.
