Kicking off Congress election campaign for the Assembly polls, Nagaland Chief Minister SC Jamir has said statehood is not the final settlement of the vexed Naga problem.
The acceptance of statehood in '60s was the best available political framework to the Naga people at that point of time, he said.
Trying to silence critics of Nagaland Pradesh Congress publication Bedrock of Naga Society, Jamir said nowhere in the booklet it was mentioned the statehood was the final settlement of the Naga political problem.
Referring to booklet's contents which mainly dealt with situation in '50s leading to signing of the 16-point agreement between the Centre and Naga people's Convention, he said the first integration of the Nagas was effected by this historic pact resulting in bringing together the Nagas of Mon and Tuensang districts under erstwhile NEFA and the people of Naga Hills district of Assam.
Nagaland People's Front (NPF), the archrival of ruling Congress, is harping on this issue during electioneering describing the booklet as "total distortion" of Naga history.
