In an intriguing move, the Swaroop Nagar Police allegedly misused acts of the Indian Penal Code and overnight framed charges against head of the Medicine Department Dr BD Mangal. Prior to this, charges had been framed against unidentified persons for the embezzlement of an endoscope worth about Rs 5 lakh.

Nearly a month back an endoscope along with some other medical equipment were found missing from an almirah kept in a room of the department. Following the incident, a report was lodged at the Swaroop Nagar Police Station by the concerned authorities.

Moreover, the Swaroop Nagar police claimed to have dispatched letters to the principal of the GSVM Medical College and the Chief Medical Officer asking them to produce the department head of medicine before the cops. But when asked, both the principal and the CMO denied receiving any such letter.

He also said, “If I am tortured by the police then I would seek the support of medical fraternity of the city.”

The incident has irked medicos and medical college teachers. The city wing of the Indian Medical Association has lamented the foolish act of the police.

Annoyed over the charges against the departmental head, a junior doctor said, “Earlier the police were suspecting the hands of medicos in the disappearance of the endoscope or trying to cover their incompetence.”

Talking to HT, principal Dr SK Katiyar said, “The charges of the police appears ridiculous as the department head is a respected doctor and has done a lot for the medicine department.”

City unit chief of IMA Dr VC Rastogi said, “If any member of the IMA is unnecessarily tortured by the police then the organisation will not mind fighting for its member at every level.”

However, Swaroop Nagar SHO Nandkishore Vajpayee said, “During investigation we have found that there was no theft in the medicine department and the departmental head took away the endoscope from using it in his private practice.”
