THE STORM that struck the city on Friday afternoon caused widespread damage to the electricity transmission and distribution system of the State and its capital. This led to an acute power crisis in various towns. Districts under the western UP were said to be the worst affected.
Power supply to the city could not be restored till late night, though the LESA men worked hard.A wide area, including Chickmandi under Aminabad faced a massive power crisis after a 1000 kva overheated transformer burst with a bang as rain drops fell upon it. A senior LESA official said that the supply would be normal only by Saturday evening as no new transformer was readily available.
The stretch between Sitapur Road and Priyadarshni Colony went without power for several hours following a fault in the cable box near the Deviki Hospital.
Likewise, a fault in the electricity line near Shahid Smarak led to crisis in various areas fed by the Residency sub-station, and a breakdown in the cable between Neebu Park and Hanuman Setu led to serous crisis in areas, including Kaiserbagh and China Bazar.
Breakdown of two feeders caused power cuts in some areas under the Hussainganj sub-station. The five electricity poles bent by the storm near the 32 PAC battalion disrupted traffic movement on Kanpur road and led to prolonged power cuts. On the other hand, a 160- mva transformer at the Chinhat transmission sub-station was damaged leading to load-shedding in some areas including, Indiranagar. A 160-mva transmission tower crashed and fell over the Chinhat-Sitapur transmission line, though it did not affect power supply.
