Stress on 'me' time

Though we can't wish away stress, pursuing a hobby you may have enjoyed in childhood, could help reduce the ill-effects.

In spite of a hectic schedule, professionals are taking time out to learn a new hobby. This helps them reduce stress and find peace within themselves.

Sharmistha Majumdar has found a new love - herself. A software expert, she works almost 12 hours a day "I find that I am totally stressed at the end of the day, leaving me exhausted to even attend to my daughter's studies.

One day I intend to take up yoga for my peace of mind," she reveals. Now Majumdar devotes at least half an hour every morning to yoga which helps her tide through the day .

Stress has adverse effects on our mental, physical and emotional health. Though we can't wish away stress, pursuing a hobby that you may have enjoyed in childhood, could help you reduce the ill-effects.

Sailesh Kapadia, a businessman, has become an expert with plants. "I always loved plants. With some time on my hands I decided to grow them. Now I have a bonsai garden," he says. "I find I am more relaxed and can concentrate better. I am always on the look out for new varieties. This has brought a new dimension to my life," he exults.

"We have a hectic schedule everyday but we make it a point to visit a new destination every six months. Be it adventure sports, a hike or a trek, it rejuvenates us. We learn something new" she adds.

After retirement, Jagdish Bajaj, a Sindhi, learnt a new language Tamil. "I thought why not learn a new language and it has proved to be a boon," he says. Battle woes Ketan Bhattacharya worked in a rubber factory for 10 years. His first love was woodwork, but his shift didn't allow him to pursue his hobby.

"One fine day I began chipping wood. I realised I could make many objects like lamp bases, wall pieces and much more. I found myself completely enveloped in this exercise. Today it is an important part of my creative fulfillment," he says.

Besides the reduction of stress, hobbies can battle depression too.
