CHAIRMAN OF the board of Governors of IIT-K Professor CNR Rao stressed upon the need to promote research activities in every branch of science.

Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, Professor Rao said that he was not satisfied with the present state of research at IIT-K. An Institute with a strength of 300 faculty should produce at least 250 research students. At present, the number of research scholars was just 60. This could not be termed very satisfactory, he said.
The IIT-K should aim at something big and unique to meet global challenges in an era of advanced technology and this was only possible when more and more students opted for research, he said.
He said the IITans had to play a very important role in the world for establishing the country as one of the leaders in new technology.
The time had gone when borrowed technology was enough to cater to the needs of the society. To join the global race, we would have to develop latest, indigenous and perfect technology, he said.
Professor Rao said that even smaller countries were going ahead in the technological race just because of their commitment to the promotion of research through their institutes.
He said the Board members were quite aware of the changing global scenario and they had been suggesting the required changes in the curriculum and the methods of teaching.
