Strike hits banking operations

The third major stir this year, the UFBU is protesting bank mergers and outsourcing of services, reports Sutirtho Patranobis.

The banking sector across the country was hit on Friday after public sector bank employees struck work to oppose outsourcing and seek fresh recruitment.

The umbrella group, United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), conducted the strike. The striking bank employees demanded revival of compassionate appointments and additional pension options besides a ban on outsourcing banking services and mergers of state-owned banks.

Union leaders threatened to initiate a series of workers' action if their demands were not met. It was the third major stir by PSU bankers this year.
