A strong earthquake measuring 7.1 shook early on Tuesday an area in the Pacific Ocean off the US Aleutian Islands, the US government reported.

However, the epicentre of the tremor was located far from any large population centres.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred 203 kilometres southeast of Attu Station, Alaska, and 1,155 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia.
No information on casualties or damage was immediately available.
