Parents and relatives of Satyendra Kumar (22), a student of Jamshedpur’s National Institute of Technology (NIT), who reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday, alleged that his roommate and seniors ragged him so brutally that he was compelled to end his life.
The first year student of Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room. His batchmates and institute authorities rushed him to Tata Main Hospital where he was pronounced brought dead.
Kumar’s mother Bindu Devi (45), who arrived here on Wednesday morning, collapsed after seeing her son’s body. She is now recovering from the shock.
Kumar’s uncle, Surendra Prasad Singh, a college professor, gave a written complaint to the police, accusing the NIT director, warden, and Kumar’s roommate of “conspiring” and “killing” his nephew. He urged police to register a murder case against the trio and prosecute them.
“The last time he called home on September 14, Satyendra said his seniors would often make him kneel down, strip and dance,” Singh said.
Refuting the allegations, NIT spokesperson Malay Neeraj said, “We haven’t had a single ragging complaint in the last five years. We are shocked to hear about the criminal proceedings being demanded against us and Satyendra’s roommate Vineet Braganza, who is totally innocent.”

{{/usCountry}}Police officer Anand Mishra told HT, “From the prima facie examination of his room in the presence of the deceased’s father and relatives, we found Satyendra to have been a victim of depression and inferiority complex.”
MCA students said Kumar rarely mixed with colleagues and seniors. He would often study books on personality development.
