THE ELECTIONS to the students’ councils displaying heightened euphoria amongst the youth went off peacefully amidst tight security today.
Both panels supported by principal students’ organisations Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) claimed victory in constituting various committees in the colleges.
Recent incidents of near clashes between various groups of students afflicted with election fever had hotted up the environment making the situation tense and forcing the respective college administrations to put in place mechanism for
ensuring free, fair and safe elections.
The States biggest government college Government Arts and Commerce College (GACC) had been turned into a virtual police camp with all entries barricaded and strict checking for going inside and Vaishnav, IlVA and Gujarati Arts and Law and Commerce College also remained on full alert.
NSUI city president Tantu Sharma claimed victory in 13 colleges where elections were fought under Joshi Panel headed by Pintu Joshi, Dixit panel and others. ABVP city general secretary Kamlesh Vaishnav also claimed victory for his outfit with panels getting elected unopposed in a number of colleges and their supported candidates getting good representation in committees of hotly contested colleges.
Interestingly elections for only one committee i.e. cultural were held in GACC where 152 students cast their vote while four other committees could not be formed as the minimum quorum of 40 could not be completed, this despite the fact that the college boasts of a student strength of nearly 5500 students.

{{/usCountry}}While the student committee elections might have passed off peacefully the real test lies tomorrow with elections to college committees and their presidents. The college and district administration along with the police elated over their success today are gearing up for a repeat of a peaceful election tomorrow.
