Students call off hunger strike

HALF-A-DOZEN Allahabad University (AU) students, who resorted to fast-unto-death in support of their demands, called off their hunger strike after an agreement with the varsity administration in the presence of district administration officials, on Thursday. The varsity administration accepted the demand of the students to involve students? representatives in the formation of the varsity ordinance.

HALF-A-DOZEN Allahabad University (AU) students, who resorted to fast-unto-death in support of their demands, called off their hunger strike after an agreement with the varsity administration in the presence of district administration officials, on Thursday. The varsity administration accepted the demand of the students to involve students’ representatives in the formation of the varsity ordinance. Besides, the varsity officials also assured the students that Students’ Union election dates would be announced within a week’s time after the ordinance was approved by the Union Government.

It is pertinent to mention that the Allahabad University after getting the Central University status, is in the process of drafting new ordinance. The ordinance, then would be forwarded to Ministry of Humour Resource and Development, which would get it approved from the Union Government.

Owing to delay in declaration of Students’ Union election dates, six students of the university had resorted to fast-unto-death near Registrar’s office about a week back, even when the varsity authorities cleared their position that the AU could not hold Students’ Union election until and unless the ordinances being prepared were approved by the Centre.

However, on Tuesday, condition of three students at the dharna site deteriorated and had to be admitted to the SRN Hospital. While the remaining three continued their hunger strike. It was today that AU authorities, including, Proctor Prof Jata Shankar, Dean Social Welfare Prof Jagdamba Singh, Chairman Board of Trustee Prof GK Rai, ADM (city) and other officials met the protesting students. The authorities negotiated on their demands and finally the students agreed to call off their strike after few of their demands were accepted. The students demanded their involvement in formation of varsity ordinances, which was accepted by the varsity authorities. As per the agreement besides involvement of academicians, distinguished citizens, former presidents of AU students union and students representatives at present would be included in the process of formation of ordinances.

Following the agreement, the students accepting the juice offered by the Proctor, the DSW and Prof Rai, called off the their strike. A large number of student leaders and students were present on the occasion.
