STUDENTS’ COUNCIL will replace the students union in Ewing Christian College (ECC) from this year onwards.

The decision has been taken by the college using its right to administer. The students council will be formed through an electoral college formed by the elected members of different units of the college.
ECC Academic Council passed the resolution to terminate the students union and form a students council in the college in a meeting held on July 31. ECC Principal Dr M Massey said that the decision had been taken to maintain discipline and academic atmosphere of the college.
According to Dr Massey the students council will have a strength of 107 members and the students will be awarded membership according to their academic achievements. The college administration will select students who have scored high position in merit in the admission test for the first year and selection of second and third year members will also be according to the performance of the students in the examination. One member per 60 students will be selected from different faculties and one member per 100 student from the non-teaching units including NSS, NCC and Gandhi Prarthna Samaj.
The selected members of the students council will unanimously elect president, vice-president, general secretary and a treasurer. The elected office-bearers will take oath in presence of the principal. The tenure of the students council will end 15 days before the date of completion of the annual examination, informed Dr Massey.

The final decision to remove the office-bearer will be taken after conducting a meeting of members of the student council within ten days from the date of proposal. Principal will be patron of the students council and has been authorised to dissolve the student council in emergency.
Dr Massey said that the proposal for the students’ council was passed by the ECC management committee last year and the process was initiated last year.
We could not form the student council last year as the students opted for students union against the students council in open voting conducted last year.
