MNNIT had received threats of serial bomb blasts on the premises a few days before Republic Day. The threat was taken seriously by MNNIT and the district police, resulting in a security cover thrown around the campus.

Later, the policemen questioned two students of Raman Hostel reportedly belonging to Andhra Pradesh. Many inmates of the hostel, on condition of anonymity, said probing agencies were of the view that the floppy carrying the threat message was fed through the computer of these two students and the IP address of their computer matched with the IP address detected after the forensic probe by police experts. They alleged that the police seized the computers and took away the CPU with them.

Questioning police investigation, a computer expert said no such mechanism had been developed that could detect such an IP address through a floppy, and if this was possible, then piracy cases rampant nowadays would have been curbed.
