At Delhi University, it’s not just the students but even the women cops who are making heads turn. As a part of an effort by the Delhi Police to reach out to students, young, with-it women constables have been deployed in college areas. And the move, say students, is definitely working.
We bumped into Sudha (name changed on request) as she zoomed around Miranda College patrolling the area on a bike, looking every bit as stylish as the students she was there to safeguard. She is a DU graduate herself and completed her BCom (Pass) by correspondence last year.
“I was a student too, until last year, so I understand the problems of young girls. Since my body language and conduct is young and outgoing, they relate to me and open up about their problems easily,” she says.
“Sometimes boys come and ask for directions, when I know that they already know where they have to go, but I’m okay with that,” she adds with a smile.
The stylish, young cops on campus are a well thought of move by the police. “We have appointed these young women constables in both North and South campuses so that girl students can talk freely and report their troubles,” says Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police PRO. Like Sinha, other constables, too, speak fluent English and are in sync with style.
Students are pleased with the change. “Age difference was a big barrier whenever we wanted to make older cops understand our problems. But this young battalion can relate to what we say,” says Arpita Bhareja, a fresher at Daulat Ram College.

“Communicating with them is not a problem and they can speak fluent English,” says Aditi Roshan of Dyal Singh College. “I’m sure that with this step, girls wouldn’t hesitate in reporting any matter to the cops,” says Prerna Narula, student of Faculty of Arts.
