It has taken 10 years for justice to prevail in the Priyadarshini Mattoo case. More than anybody else, the former IPS officer who abused his chair to derail justice, should be punished. Before sentencing Santosh Kumar Singh, JP Singh should be hanged for raping the spirit of democracy, subverting law and shamelessly defending a lie.

It is not fair to blame the sessions court alone for not serving the ends of justice. As we know, the law is blind — it works on evidence. So it is the responsibility of the investigating agency to work efficiently and honestly to enable justice to take its course

While high-profile cases like those of Priyadarshani Mattoo and Jessica Lall have attracted tremendous coverage in the media, there are many more cases in which miscarriage of justice has taken place due to mishandling by the investigating agencies or the utter failure of the judicial system. There is a need to revamp the criminal justice system before the common man loses all faith.

The report Sir Syed’s legacy of light (October 17) is a correct assessment of Sir Syed’s work. He was a true champion of Hindu-Muslim unity. Though he conceived the idea of a Muslim educational institution, he kept its gates open to all, irrespective of their religious beliefs. It is sad that some historians have termed Sir Syed as the person who laid the foundation of Pakistan. This is absurd. Sir Syed was an Indian deep down, and a great builder of this nation.
