Sumitra Mahajan went on to pursue Law as her chosen profession. She studied for her MA, LLB at Indore University, Indore (Madhya Pradesh) before going on to work as a lawyer. She married Shri Jayant Mahajan in January 1965 and has two sons. In 1989 she was elected for her first term in Lok Sabha, and re-elected for a further 5 terms.
