If your Sunday is usually dedicated to recovering from a hangover, you might be surprised by the latest trend taking over the city. Sundown parties, a fun way to bid the weekend farewell before tumbling into the Monday blues, are picking up steam, with city lounges and pubs announcing their own versions.
Vardhaman Choksi, whose Bandra rooftop establishment Escobar, is inaugurating its sundown party today, says, “Our bar looks almost magical between 5 pm – 7 pm when the sky is literally pink. Of course, it has everything to do with the location, otherwise we wouldn’t have a sundown.”
Juhu lounge Aurus set the tone for the city’s Sunday specials and partner Vicky Singh explains the lure: “On a Friday night, the clubs are packed. But at these Sunday set-ups, you meet a lot of like-minded people who have come to listen to the featured artiste. “
Location and the weather are the two biggest factors driving the trend, points out Rahul Joshi, food and beverage manager, The Dome, The Intercontinental, Marine Drive. “Purely based on the location and the view, we decided on a ‘sundowner’ at our restaurant. It works because we’re close to the sea, which is the reason for being in Mumbai.”
But are the party animals ready to face a working week after all the fun after sundown? “We don’t let it get too late and usually wind up at 8 pm. We don’t want people to get wasted and mess up their morning,” says Joshi, adding that the Sunday parties are easy on the wallet too because they don’t charge an entry fee, and offer a discount on everything, sometimes up to 25 per cent.
