Gurgaon could now boast of becoming the second city in Haryana after Faridabad to have procured a sewage suction machine (also called super sucker) for Rs 65 lakh to mechanically clean sewer lines.
From now on, there will be no manual cleaning of sewage lines in Gurgaon city that has a 1000-km sewer network, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) officials said on Tuesday.
A number of privately developed colonies and group housing societies, and also those promoted by Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), are still to be connected to the master (trunk) sewerage lines.
Even today about 60-70 privately-owned low-capacity sewage suckers continue to extract sewage from the underground sewage tanks of various localities.
Thousands of litres of untreated sewage is thrown in vacant plots daily.

Apart from procuring the machine, the MCG has slapped a blanket ban on dumping of untreated sewage water on the vacant tracts of land and plots in residential colonies.
It has now made it mandatory for all private tankers to dump sewage collected from townships at the new 50-MGD capacity sewage treatment plant (STP) at Behrampur that will be start functioning by the end of March.

MCG Commissioner Rajesh Khullar said they may get four more such machines if it works out fine.
Khullar said manual cleaning will stop as poisonous gases emanating from these lines often kill cleaners.
“We have hired the services of a private agency that has provided us one driver and a operator. We will pay Rs 3,500 per day for running our machine,” Khullar added.
