Support for suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt is growing with the opposition party and activists slamming the arrest of Bhatt on "untenable and flimsy grounds" by the Gujarat police.
On monday, a huge rally was taken out by activists and NGOs to support Bhatt in Ahmedabad. "His arrest is totally untenable and motivated. When the Apex Court was seized with the matter, what prompted the Gujarat police to arrest the officer in such a hasty manner?," Social activist Tessta Setalvad asked.
She said Bhatt has challenged the FIR in which he has been arrested, before the Supreme Court, which is considering the matter. She added that whoever raises a voice of dissent against the chief minister gets harassed by the state authorities.
Former DGP of Gujarat, RB Sr eekumar also slammed the government for arresting the whistleblower cop who refused to toe the line of the Modi administration. On Sunday, Congress leaders Shankersinh Vaghela, leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil and former deputy CM Narhari Amin visited Bhatt's wife Shweta to extend their solidarity with the family.
Meanwhile, Ahmedabad sessions court admitted bail application of Bhatt, who was sent to judicial custody on Saturday after his arrest.
The court has issued a notice to the Gujarat government and director general of police in the case.
Bhatt had accused Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi of complicity in the 2002 post-Godhra riots. Bhatt was arrested in connection with an FIR filed by a constable for allegedly threatening him and making him sign a false affidavit with regard to a meeting called by Modi on February 27, 2002, hours after the Godhra train carnage.He has been charged under IPC sections 341 (causing wrongful restraint), 342 (causing wrongful confinement), 195 (giving fabricated evidence) and 189 (threat of injury to public servant).Earlier, in July this year, Bhatt has moved the Supreme Court demanding that there be an independent investigation of the FIR against him.
