India's leading wicket-taker Anil Kumble signed with English county cricket club Surrey on Monday. The leg-spinner will play his first match against Somerset on Wednesday. He missed the start of the county season because he was playing in a four-Test series against West Indies in May and June before spending time with his wife and newborn baby. Kumble took 23 wickets in the West Indies to help India win its first test series in the Caribbean since 1971, taking his tally to 533.

"Anil is a world-class spinner with a great deal of international and first class experience," Surrey coach Alan Butcher said. "His ability, character and professionalism will be a great addition to the dressing room, as we push for promotion into division one."

Kumble previously played for Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. Kumble could miss more of Surrey's season if he's selected for India's triangular one-day series against Sri Lanka and South Africa, which starts Aug. 14. However, Kumble hasn't played one-day cricket for India since August 2005, missing India's last six series.
