The incident occurred at Harinarayanpur village on June 22 when two outsiders were seen moving in "suspicious" manner at the village where strong rumours were doing rounds for the last few days about the presence of child lifters in the area, Superintendent of Police, Nishant Kumar Tiwari said.

When they failed to give satisfactory explanation to the villagers about the reason for their presence there, a crowd began kicking, raining blows and bludgeoning them with sticks.

They died on the spot, the police said.

The bodies were recovered on the outskirts of the village and a case of manslaughter was lodged with the police station against unknown persons, Tiwari said.

He said the antecedants of the victims and their identities were yet to be ascertained.
