The cheering-forPakistan- team controversy resurfaced on Wednesday as three Kashmiri students accused Meerut’s Swami Vivekanand Subharti university of disallowing them to join classes last week. Many others in the case are seeking migration to other colleges as well.
“I was planning to return to the campus in coming days. My juniors called me from there as they were not allowed to attend to the classes,” alleged Younis Gowhar, a student seeking migration from the campus.
Muteeb-ul-Majid, who was among 67 suspended students, told HT that the J&K government has failed to assure them security. “We fear for our lives. We find it hard to continue studies in a varsity where we were booked for sedition,” he said.
Around 67 students were suspended in March after they raised slogans in favour of Pakistan cricket team clashing with the Indian outfit.
However, CM Omar Abdullah’s appointed point-man on the issue, Junaid Azim Mattu, disputed the claims. “The place is going for polls soon. Only three students had returned to the campus so far who had been asked to join the classes later,” Mattu said.
HT has already reported that the varsity is willing to take these students — who were studying on the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme for free — back once polls are over in Meerut, which are on April 10.
