THE State Government’s order to suspend two senior IAS officers – one of commissioner and the other of secretary rank —may have invited the wrath of the UP IAS Association, but these suspensions, like in the past, are likely to lead nowheree—ending up to be more of a brief recess than a precursor to real punishment to the IAS officers involved.
In fact, these ‘populist’ suspensions are never meant to be a deterrent. Or so it would seem if one takes a lowdown on the suspensions over the years.
As per estimates, the successive chief ministers have announced suspensions of about 100 IAS officers in the recent years. This means that almost one out of every five IAS officers has faced the wrath of the State Government at one point of time or the other. In some cases the axe has fallen on the officers more than once.
Yet barring the cases where suspensions were ordered following serious charges of corruption or administrative lapses, the State Government had failed to even give a charge-sheet to the suspended officers. So the suspended officers ended up have a happy ending.
Take the cases of suspension in recent months. Out of about 15 IAS officers placed under suspension in recent months, only five remain suspended now. The orders of suspension have been revoked in the cases of others. In most cases suspension orders are either withdrawn for lack of any charges or they become redundant for lack of the Centre’s nod.

{{/usCountry}}The State Government had been constantly flouting the mandatory provision of sending information about placing any all India service cadre officer under suspension within 15 days to the Centre, said a senior IAS officer. As per the provisions of the All India Service Rules, the State Government’s orders placing any officer under suspension had to be ratified by the Centre within 90 days, he said.
