After 1994, the Swiss squad has not made it to the World cup finals and that too was after a long hiatus post their 1966 appearance. But, a new and ambitious team prepares to show a good performance in Germany this year.
Switzerland remained unbeaten in the qualifying matches but had to settle for a second position, after managing to slide Israel one place lower. They were saved of a play-off against Turkey, going through by the virtue of the way-goal rule.
They also showed a challenge to France, a strong team in the group. This gives a message that though considerably a younger squad, Switzerland is ready to give tough competition to the rest of the teams.
