THE STATE’S Trade Tax Department has asked the Railway Board to allow it to set up check-posts on railway premises near parcel houses in 48 cities.
Trade Tax commissioner Rajnish Gupta told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the Railways did not allow the department to check consignments procured by traders, on the Railways compound. This, he said, had given rise to tax evasion. Gupta said many other States were also facing the same problem and the matter had been taken up by the cabinet secretary who was expected to take a final decision on the matter.
He said the Railways had allowed the department some time back to set up its kiosks outside the platform in Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varansi, Agra and Moradabad. However, he said checking could be effective only when the check-posts were set up near parcel houses.
He said that there was also a plan to computerise and web-link all the trade tax check-posts in future so that the movements of trucks could be monitored from the headquarters. Gupta said the focus was on enforcement work to plug revenue leakages.
He claimed UP had left all other States behind by recording 27.95 per cent tax growth rate.
