Taiwan and China

While Taiwan has enjoyed a de facto independent status since 1949, it is formally recognized as a part of the People?s Republic of China. Recently, Taiwan has attempted to assert itself as an independent state. However, every attempt has been met with some form of saber rattling by China.

Recently, Taiwan has attempted to assert itself as an independent state. However, every attempt has been met with some form of saber rattling by China. This in turn has sparked an international debate, with the US serving to encourage those who favour formal independence for Taiwan.

One of the reasons for China to consider Taiwan as a renegade province is that Chinese nationalists had retreated to the island after losing to the Communists in a mainland civil war fought in the country in 1949.
