Take advantage of IT for judicial work: Sabharwal

He admitted that the nation was way behind in using technology for recording evidence and filing of petitions through e-mail.

The advantages of information technology should be put to use in facilitating judicial work, Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal said on Sunday.

"In recent years, we have seen the great advantage derived from it by computerisation or video conferencing and similar other modes," Sabharwal said after launching the official website of the Orissa Advocate General's office at a function.

He said many states had started remand work by using video conferencing. It provided advantages both to the accused and the state from the point of expenditure and security.

"We are looking at connectivity of all state judicial academies with the national judicial academy in Bhopal to share resources," he said while pointing out that the nation was way behind in using technology for recording evidence and filing of petitions through e-mail.

The Supreme Court, Sabharwal said, had introduced the facility of e-filing of petitions from anywhere in the country with effect from October 2. Payment of fees through the Internet could also be made.

"In the years to come, we have to be dependent on these facilities and I am confident that faster development could be ushered in through this mode," he said.
