Yes, on the face, it appears so but there are factors behind it.

What are those factors ?

The main factor is population. The population of Allahabad range is much more in comparison to Chitrakoot and Jhansi ranges. Crime increases in the ratio of population. Moreover high-tech crime has started in Allahabad city whereas the same is yet to pick up in places like Chitrakoot and Jhansi.

Are criminals so emboldened that they do not hesitate in committing crimes even in posh areas like Civil Lines where a railway contractor was murdered recently?

Yes, it is true, criminals have got emboldened. However, this particular murder was the outcome of old enmity. Sohrab has a long criminal history. He is the one who shot the railway contractor Nanhe Khan dead. But, nobody connected with this murder will be spared. Police has taken this incident seriously. A police picket has been ordered to be deployed near the house of the victim. His brother who has lodged the FIR has been provided with a gunner.

Yes, action against several station officers has already been taken. Many of them have been suspended while several others sent to Lines. Action against higher officials like the circle officers and the police superintendents will also be taken. We have even reopened several old cases which, we thought, were botched up.

What have you done to lessen the crime rate ?

Whenever needed the directives are issued to the subordinate officials. A list of domestic help who often commit crime is being prepared at the police station level. Watch on cyber cafes is also being kept. We have already asked all the internet providers to supply us the list of people or places which are hooked to the internet. Introducing community policing once again is being mooted. This might help us in containing the crime rate.
